JOSHUA WAS
BORN IN KENTUCKY AND DEVELOPED AN EARLY INTEREST IN SKETCHING AND
FIGURATIVE DRAWING. HIS FORMATIVE YEARS AT THE NOTED SAYRE ACADEMY WERE
FOCUSED ON ACADEMICS BUT HIS PERSONAL STUDIES CONCENTRATED ON EXPERIMENT
WITH AND EMPHASIS ON ANATOMY. THIS EXTRAORDINARY TALENT WAS INSTRUMENTAL
IN HIS COLLABORATION WITH THE CHARLES HAROLD COLLECTION ON THE “TROPICAL
NUDE SERIES” REMINISCENT OF THE CLASSIC MATISSE AND GAUGIN DRAWINGS. THESE
ARE A PRISTINE SUITE OF PEN AND INK ORIGINALS.
JOSHUA’S FORMAL EDUCATION WAS AT THE PRESTIGIOUS TUFTS UNIVERSITY WHERE
HIS STUDIES ABROAD BECAME MAJOR INFLUENCES. HE HAS TRAVELED IN THE SOUTH
SEAS AND THE FAR EAST. HE SPEAKS SPANISH, JAPANESE AND CHINESE AND THE
ASIAN CULTURE IS EVIDENT IN HIS TEXTURAL COLLAGE ABSTRACTIONS. CURRENT
WORKS ARE HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY THE ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST SCHOOL,
SPECIFICALLY ROBERT MOTHERWELL, JACKSON POLLACK, MARK ROTHKO AND VILLEM DE
KOONING. THERE IS AN UNMISTAKABLE PRESENCE IN THE DYNAMIC CANVASES AND
CONSTRUCTIONS. TEXTURE, MEMENTOS, PERSONAL TEXT, SYMBOLS, COLOR
EXPRESSIONS AND COMPOSITIONAL EXPLORATION ARE EFFORTLESSLY INFUSED INTO A
MONOLITHIC STATEMENT EVOKING INTER-PERSONAL REACTION.
